A good moment for SA implementation is when there is a DCS migration project. Or if there is a large upgrade in a existing control system. When building a new plant you should always remember that SA is a important part.

However, do remember that people are not fond of changes. It is important that management AND operators understand why SA is needed. And it ultimately makes their work easier.

The ASM did a lot of research about Abnormal Situation Management. The members from ASM are people working for the biggest company’s in the world. Where avoiding abnormal situation is very important. The result from this research is a set of rules. You can make a good start if you look at these rules and use them wisely.

Rules are about (most important appointed):

Use a standard display hierarchy

Use a proces overview display

Display refresh rate is below 2 sec

Ensure that displays are avilable to view disabled and inhibited alarms

Ensure that navigation is simple and flat

Ensure alarm annunciator are effective

Depict equipment without excessive detail for quick identification

Use color for visual attention to critical information

Reserve colors used for alarm coding for alarms only

Use a minimum of color across display hierarchy levels

Use symbols and line coding that is understood easily

Use text and numbers that are legible at the users typical position

Ensure that stakeholders are involved

Use design specifications for consistent implementation.
